Question
Q:- A car travels with the following speeds with the following durations:
[1] with 5 meters/second for 5 seconds
[2] with 17 meters/second for 5 seconds
[3] with 3 meters/second for 5 seconds
[4] with 14 meters/second for 5 seconds
[5] with 11 meters/second for 5 seconds
Find [1] average speed , and [2] observe that average speed is average of the speeds when time durations are the same.
-
Step : 1
Total distance travelled = 5 x 5 + 17 x 5 + 3 x 5 + 14 x 5 + 11 x 5 meters
= (5 + 17 + 3 + 14 + 11) x 5 meters
= 50 x 5 meters = 250 meters
-
Step : 2
Total time travelled = 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 seconds
= 5 x 5 seconds = 25 seconds
=>mean speed = total distance / total time
=>mean speed = (5 + 17 + 3 + 14 + 11) x 5 meters / 5 x 5 seconds
=>mean speed = (5 + 17 + 3 + 14 + 11) / 5 meters/second
=> mean speed = 50 / 5 = 10 meters/second
-
Step : 3
In (5 + 17 + 3 + 14 + 11)/5
(5 + 17 + 3 + 14 + 11) is the sum of all the speeds and 5 is the count of all the speeds
So, (5 + 17 + 3 + 14 + 11) divided by 5 is also the mathematical average of the speeds
